Charleston Southern, coming off 13 days of rest, ups its record to 18-37 on the year and 2-11 in Big South play.
The loss snaps Liberty's four-game road winning streak, dropping the Lady Flames record to 15-38-1 on the season and 3-10 in conference action.
The Lady Flames jumped out to an early lead in the top of the second inning, thanks to Liberty's fourth home run in the last two games.
J'nae Jefferson, who got the game-winning hit in extra innings against Gardner-Webb on Tuesday, clocked her second round tripper of the year. The sophomore sent a 2-1 offering from starting pitcher Jamie Wellons well over the fence in left center, staking Liberty to the early 1-0 edge.
But the lead was short lived for Liberty, as the homestanding Buccaneers tied the game in the bottom of the frame. Tatjana Slawson opened the inning as she was struck by her team-leading 16th pitch of the season.
After moving to second on Jennifer Brooks' sacrifice bunt, Slawson and Erin Kegley traded places when the left fielder dropped a double into the gap in right, tying the game at 1-1.
Charleston Southern continued to plate runs in the third, opening up a three-run lead, 4-1, on two hits and some free base runners.
Starting pitcher Tiffani Smith struggled to find the plate during the frame, walking three and striking her second batter of the game. Following back-to-back walks, Lisa Rice singled to center to plate pinch runner Wellons.
Three batters later, Kegley was issued the third free pass of the inning, forcing pinch runner Erin Green in from third. Amy Trenkamp followed by dropping a single down the right-field line, allowing pinch runner Caitlin Allen to score from third and cap the three-run frame.
For the third-straight inning, Charleston Southern made additions to the scoreboard, scoring an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth. Jill Shondel led off the frame by dropping down a bunt, but Smith's throw to first sailed wide of Cassie Hendrix who was covering, allowing Shondel to move to second.
Following Smith's fifth strikeout of the game, Ashley Conway singled up the middle. The base hit scored Shondel from second, chased Smith from the pitcher's circle and pushed Charleston Southern's lead to four runs, 5-1.
Liberty's bats started to come alive late in the contest, as the Lady Flames recorded five of their nine hits during their last two times at the plate. After stranding a pair of runners in the sixth, Liberty strung together a trio of hits with two outs in the seventh.
Amber DePasquale started the attempted rally in the seventh with an infield single deep in the hole at shortstop. Cassie Hendrix continued with a bunt single in front of the plate, followed by Beth Bennett stroking a double to the gap in left center, plating both base runners.
However, Wellons got Ashley Williams to ground out to short, ending the threat and the contest. The righty went the distance for the 19th time this year, upping her record to 13-18. She allowed three runs on nine hits, walking one and fanning three.
Smith suffered the loss for Liberty, falling back to 5-13 on the season. The rookie allowed five runs, four of which were earned, on four hits during 3 1/3 innings of work, while walking three and fanning five batters. Sarah Ellis tossed 2 2/3 innings of effective relief, allowing one hit, while walking two and striking out another to close out the game.
Charleston Southern scored five runs on five hits, with five different players each getting a hit. Kegley was 1-for-1 with two RBIs, while Conway was 1-for-2 with a RBI.
Jefferson led Liberty offensively, as the sophomore was a perfect 3-for-3 from the plate with a run scored and a RBI. Bennett was 1-for-3 with two RBIs to round out Liberty's nine-hit attack.
Following a 20-minute break, the two squads will return to the CSU Softball Field to conclude today's doubleheader with a second contest. Liberty and Charleston Southern will wrap up the series tomorrow afternoon with a single game at 2:30 p.m., in both team's regular-season finales.
