With the victory, Liberty ups its record to 16-38-1 on the season and 4-10 in Big South play. The loss drops Charleston Southern's mark to 18-39 overall and 2-12 in league action.
Liberty wasted little time taking a lead in the game, plating three runs on three doubles in the top of the first inning.
Amber DePasquale started the extra-base fest, doubling to straightaway center field to open the contest. Three batters later, Ashley Williams added to her school-record career doubles total, connecting on her 50th two-base hit in a Liberty uniform to plate DePasquale and the game's first run.
Following a walk issued to J'nae Jefferson, Keely McMillon capped the two-base hit streak, doubling into the gap in left center to drive in Williams and Jefferson and push Liberty's lead to three runs, 3-0.
The Lady Flames added to the advantage in the top of the second, as Jenna Eatmon got the visitors their fourth double of the game with a shot to left center. The freshman moved to third on a wild pitch offered from pitcher Jill Shondel, followed by DePasquale's infield single to allow Eatmon to score and extend Liberty's lead to four runs, 4-0.
Extra base hits continued to abound in the fourth inning, leading to three more runs for the Lady Flames. Shannon McKain drew a one-out walk, directly followed by Eatmon's second home run in three games, as the right fielder homered over the fence in right center.
DePasquale directly followed with a triple down the right-field line, chasing Shondel from the contest. Cassie Hendrix welcomed relief pitcher Whitney James to the game, singling off the righty up the middle to plate her fellow freshman and stake Liberty to a 7-0 advantage.
The Lady Flames left the remainder of the game in the hands of Sarah Ellis, who tossed her second shutout of the season to improve her record to 7-19. The junior scattered two hits over seven innings of work to record her 18th complete game of the year.
Shondel suffered the loss for Charleston Southern, as the senior was roughed up for seven runs on seven hits over 3 1/3 innings of work. James and Caitlin Allen finished off the final 2 2/3 innings, allowing four hits combined.
Liberty had its fourth double-digit hit total of the year, pounding out 11 base knocks during the victory. DePasquale paced the way, as the freshman was a perfect 3-for-3 from the plate, scoring twice and driving in another.
Jefferson and Eatmon followed by both going 2-for-3 from the dish, with Jefferson scoring once and Eatmon driving in two and crossing the plate twice.
Shondel and Ashley Conway both finished the game 1-for-3 for the homestanding Buccaneers, accounting for Charleston Southern's pair of hits.
Eight members of Charleston Southern's squad will participate in the University's graduation ceremony tomorrow morning before returning to the CSU Softball Field for tomorrow's Big South series. The two squads will conclude their regular-season slate with a single game at 2:30 p.m.
