Liberty Comes From Behind for Win at Winthrop

Liberty erased an early 4-0 deficit with three runs in the third and fifth innings for a 7-6 victory over the Winthrop Eagles, Saturday afternoon, at the Winthrop Ballpark.
With the win, Liberty improves to 9-5 in the Big South Conference and 22-21 overall. Winthrop falls to 7-7 in conference play and 17-25.
Winthrop pushed across four runs in the second inning to take a 4-0 lead. Right fielder Billy Froehlich began the Eagles' second with a double to the center field wall. Third baseman Bryn Henderson followed with a RBI single to score the first run of the contest. After the first out of the frame, the next three Winthrop batters singled to load the bases. Center fielder Tyler McBride was then hit by a pitch to force in the second run of the inning. A RBI single by left fielder Tony Brunetti and a RBI ground out by first baseman Eddie Tisdale gave the Eagles a 4-0 lead.
Liberty cut into the Winthrop lead in the top of the third frame. With one out, shortstop Aaron Phillips (Sr., Claremore, Okla.) and second baseman Kenneth Negron (Jr., Kingwood, Texas) were both hit by pitches. Catcher Errol Hollinger (Jr., Upland, Calif.) loaded the bases by reaching on an infield single. Phillips scored the first run of the game for the Flames on wild pitch and right fielder P.K. Keller (Sr., Clearwater, Fla.) slapped a run-scoring single to right field, slicing the Winthrop advantage to 4-2. First baseman David Giammaresi (Sr., Coral Springs, Fla.) followed with a single to plate another run and cut the Eagle edge to 4-3.
Two innings later, the Flames plated three additional runs to take a 6-4 lead. Hollinger singled and Keller walked to begin the fifth frame. Hollinger tied the contest at 4-4, scoring on a fielding error by shortstop Kevin Nolan on a grounder by Giammaresi. Third baseman Cody Brown (Jr., Boca Raton, Fla.) then grounded into a fielder's choice to bring home Keller. Designated hitter Garrett Young (Sr., Fountain Valley, Calif.) followed with a RBI single to center field for a two-run Liberty lead.
Liberty stretched its advantage in the seventh. With two outs, Young singled sharply to left field. The designated hitter then stole second. When left fielder Aaron Grijalva (Sr., Redlands, Calif.) drew a walk, Young swiped third and came home, as catcher Billy Froehlich's threw wide of third, for a 7-4 lead.
Winthrop narrowed its gap in the eighth inning, plating a single run. Right fielder Bennett Jordan doubled with one out and later scored on a throwing error by Brown on a grounder to third by designated hitter Eddie Rohan.
In the ninth inning, the Eagles cut the lead to one with a sacrifice fly by shortstop Kevin Nolan. However, reliever Steven Evans (Fr., RHP, Amherst, Va.) entered the game with one out and a runner on first and retired the next two batters to seal the victory.
Liberty starter Dustin Umberger (Jr., RHP, Hummelstown. Pa.) pitched 8 1/3 innings to move to 5-3 on the year. The right-hander gave up five runs, four of which were earned, on 10 hits. Evans earns his first save of the year by recording the final two outs of the contest. Winthrop reliever Billy Tinsley, the second Eagle hurler in the contest, took the loss to fall to 3-2. He allowed three runs on three hits in 1 1/3 innings of work.
Hollinger and Young led all hitters with three hits each for Liberty. Brunetti and second baseman Aaron Bomomi had two hits apiece for Winthrop.
The two squads meet in the final game of the three-game conference series tomorrow at Winthrop Ballpark. The rubber game of the series is scheduled for 2 p.m.
