For the third straight day at the 114th Penn Relays, the Liberty women's track & field team put together a solid relay performance, Saturday at Franklin Field in Philadelphia. The Lady Flames, who had set school relay records during each of the first two days of the prestigious meet, placed 10th in the 4 x 800 Championship of America race with their second-fastest time ever, 9:05.67.
Liberty's appearance in the Championship of America section, alongside the top relay squads in the nation, was its first of the weekend. Undaunted by the stiff competition, the Lady Flames' squad of Jaime Watson (Jr., Ravenna, Mich.), Kati Albright (Fr., Wake Forest, N.C.), Sarah Roberts (Sr., Zieglerville, Pa.) and Rebekah Ricksecker (Jr., Laurel, Del.) placed 10th, running the fastest time by a Liberty team since 1988. LSU's strong anchor leg allowed the Tigers to edge Tennessee for first place, in a time of 8:30.98.
The race was Watson's third in as many days. She ran the 800-meter leg for Liberty's record-setting distance medley relay squad on Thursday and anchored the Lady Flames' 4 x 200 unit to a school record on Friday.
Liberty freshman Clarence Powell (Marianna, Fla.), coming off a Big South triple jump title last Saturday, competed in the college section of the men's triple jump during the final day of the Penn Relays. His best effort reached 48-10, earning an eighth-place finish. The freshman's section was won by North Carolina Central's William Scott, with a leap of 50-8.75.
Liberty will return to Lynchburg for its final home meet of the 2008 outdoor track & field season, the Liberty Twilight Qualifier. The one-day meet is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. Thursday, at the Matthes-Hopkins Track Complex.
