Liberty senior Clendon Henderson remained undefeated in the discus this season by winning at the Drake Relays, Saturday at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa. The senior has now triumphed in all five of his discus competitions in 2008, after throwing 181-11.
Henderson (Meadow, Texas) found the facility which will host the 2008 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships to his liking on Saturday, despite some chilly, windy weather conditions. He outdistanced runner-up Dan Hytinen of Wisconsin-Whitewater by more than four feet to claim his second major title of the season. Henderson, ranked No. 2 nationally in the event, previously took the Texas Relays discus championship. The senior also redeemed himself after fouling on all three of his shot put attempts Friday at Drake.
Fellow senior thrower Jon Hart (Wyomissing, Pa.) also excelled on Saturday, with his preferred implement, the hammer. Competing against a stellar field which included the top two hammer throwers in the nation, Hart placed fourth with a top mark of 215-5. It was the third consecutive meet Hart has thrown over 65 meters, a distance he had reached only once in his career prior to this season.
Auburn's senior duo of Cory Martin and Jake Dunkleberger, the aforementioned No. 1 and 2 hammer throwers in the country, swept the top two spots at the Drake Relays. Martin's winning heave stretched the tape to 238-9.
For the second consecutive week, Matt Parker (Jr., Rome, N.Y.) topped out at 6-8.75 in the high jump. One of nine jumpers who went out of the competition at 6-8.75, Parker tied for ninth place with Drake's Jaron VanMaanen on misses. Northern Iowa's Ehi Oamen was victorious, clearing 7-0.25.
Liberty will return to Lynchburg for its final home meet of the 2008 outdoor track & field season, the Liberty Twilight Qualifier. The one-day meet is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. Thursday, at the Matthes-Hopkins Track Complex.
