Liberty senior Piper Newby has earned a spot on the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic cross country team, it was announced this afternoon.
Newby (Hayden Lake, Idaho) was one of 91 female student-athletes in the nation to be honored. The kinesiology major was included on the squad due to her 3.44 cumulative grade point average and her 17th-place finish at the 2007 NCAA Southeast Regional Cross Country Championships.
The senior finished her Liberty cross country career on a high note, earning all-region distinction and setting a program record with her 6K time of 21:07.70. She also garnered All-Big South honors in cross country for the second-straight year, with a runner-up finish. Her efforts helped lead the Lady Flames to their second conference team title in a row.
Newby was previously honored by the USTFCCCA by earning inclusion on the organization's 2007 All-Academic track & field team. She has been a part of two consecutive Big South All-Academic teams in cross country and has garnered a trio of appearances on the Big South Presidential Honor Roll during her time at Liberty.
Newby is currently competing in her final indoor track & field season for the Lady Flames. Her next meet will be the New Balance Big South Indoor Track & Field Championships, this Friday and Saturday in Clemson, S.C.
