Liberty Head Football Coach Danny Rocco held his weekly media press conference in the Donor Room of the Williams Football Operations Center earlier this afternoon.
During the 30-minute press conference, Rocco touched on numerous subjects, including Liberty's return to Williams Stadium with a shutout victory, the importance of opening Big South play with a pair of victories and the challenging match-up with Patriot League powerhouse Lafayette. Rocco also:
• Talked about the team's exciting start to the season and the team's current winning streak.
• Remarked about the team's decisive victory over Stony Brook after three-straight close contests.
• Commented on the team's strong defensive effort against Stony Brook and the number of players who contributed during the shutout victory.
• Spoke about the team's dominance statistically against the Seawolves, looking at both offensive and defensive numbers, like time of possession, total offensive yards, nine players rushing and catching the football and third-down defense.
• Spoke about the number of players who got a chance to play in the game, especially late, including the second-string offensive linemen and reserve quarterback Spencer Landis.
• Remarked about the outstanding play of the special teams, especially in the area of kickoff return coverage.
• Spoke about the strong history of Lafayette's football program, including their past playoff history.
• Commented on Lafayette's balanced offensive attack, the strong play of the nation's leading defense and the different challenges the Leopards present Liberty.
• Asked to speak about Liberty's offensive attack and the challenges it presents opposing defensive coordinators.
• Talked about the team's game plan to jump out ahead of Stony Brook, as the Seawolves had previously struggled to rally after falling behind in games earlier this year.
• Remarked about the return of Kyle O'Donnell to the line-up, his playing status this week and how his return helps the linebackers.
• Commented on the program's frustration about Liberty's home crowds leaving early after the Flames get up early and the crowd's lack of enthusiasm during certain key defensive plays throughout the contest against Stony Brook.
• Talked about the defensive changes that were made prior to the Stony Brook game and how they factored into the Flames' victory.
• Asked to comment on the discipline play of teams like Lehigh and Lafayette, including their lack of penalties and their solid defensive play.
• Remarked about where Lafayette ranks in terms of overall competition level as compared to the rest of the teams Liberty has faced in 2008.
• Spoke about the strong play of quarterback Brock Smith lately and the coaching staff's decision to stand behind Smith as he developed over the past few years.
• Commented about Harvard's ability to pass the ball with efficiency against Lafayette in the Leopards' only loss of the season.
• Spoke about the Flames' kicking game and the return of Mike Larsson to the line-up this week, as opposed to the combination of Matt Bevins and Ben Shipps.
• Remarked about the freak injuries to Matt Bevins and Mike Larsson last week and how it affected the Flames' game play against Stony Brook.
• Spoke about the injury to Patrick Calvary last week and how his absence from the field allowed players like Tim Torrence, Kajuan Lee, Chuck Duffey and Brandon Saunders to get some extra playing experience.
