For the third-consecutive week, Matt Bevins kicked his way into the Big South weekly honor roll, this time doing so as a multifaceted player. For his efforts, the rookie was named Big South Freshman of the Week, as announced by the league earlier today.
Bevins (Fr., K/P, Newport News, Va.) finished with his second-highest point total of the year, scoring nine of Liberty's 33 points in the Flames' 33-0 blanking of league newcomer Stony Brook.
The freshman connected on both of his field goal attempts, from 22 and 27 yards out, pushing his streak to seven-consecutive field goals made. He was also successful on all three of his point-after attempts.
Displaying his versatility, Bevins also handled the Flames' punting duties for the first time this year, in place of fellow freshman Mike Larsson. Bevins booted four punts for 167 yards, averaging 41.8 yards per punt.
Two of his four punts landed inside the Seawolves' 20-yard line, helping prevent the visitors from crossing the 50-yard line but three times during the 60-minute contest. Liberty entered the game as the team with the third fewest punts in the nation at the FCS level, having punted just 11 times during its first five games of the year.
VMI, who picked up its first conference victory since 2005 with a 47-20 win over Coastal Carolina, took home two of the remaining three weekly honors. Keydets quarterback Tim Maypray and linebacker A.J. Gross were tabbed Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, while Gardner-Webb's Michael Hanna took home Special Teams Player of the Week accolades.
The Flames will take a week off from Big South play this weekend, when No. 14/15 Liberty hosts Lafayette at Williams Stadium for an afternoon contest at 3:30 p.m. The Leopards come into their first-ever meeting with Liberty with a 4-1 record, falling only to previously ranked Harvard.
