Liberty junior Phil Leineweber was a double event winner for the second meet in a row and freshman Clarence Powell broke his own school triple jump record, marking day two's standout performances at the On Track Open, Saturday at the Tolsma Indoor Track Center.
In total, Liberty athletes won six events at the two-day competition, the Flames' second of three home indoor meets this season. A trio of facility records were set and three competitors came away with two victories at the meet.
Leineweber (New Freedom, Pa.), who won the 400 and 500-meter dashes at the Jan. 11-12 Virginia Tech Invitational, was victorious at the 200 and 500-meter distances this time around. His 200-meter time of 22.53 edged Team Velocity's Derrick Archie by .02 seconds. In the 500-meter dash, the Keystone State native had more breathing room, as his 1:06.06 clocking won by over three seconds.
Powell (Marianna, Fla.) has now set three Liberty triple jump records in his first three appearances in a Flames uniform. On Saturday, he extended to 49-11.75, just missing the facility mark of 50 feet. Powell's effort was good enough to defeat Anthony Bryant by nine-plus inches, however.
Daniel Newell (Jr., Roanoke, Va.) started the day 95 points behind South Carolina's Curt McGill, in second place in the heptathlon. Newell still trailed McGill by 40 tallies entering the seventh and final event, the 1,000-meter run. The Liberty junior crossed the line 21 seconds ahead of the Gamecock athlete, enabling Newell to capture the heptathlon crown with a new personal best and IC4A-qualifying total of 5,155.
Senior Jon Hart (Wyomissing, Pa.) took home a first place and a runner-up finish on Saturday. He opened the day with his indoor specialty, heaving the weight 63-7.75, a distance which put him ahead of teammate and classmate Clendon Henderson (Meadow, Texas). Hart then made his 2008 season debut in the shot put and qualified for the IC4A Championships with a 53-1.75. His distance was six inches shy of event champion South Carolina's Jason Cook.
Chenoa Freeman (So., Lincoln, Del.) was the lone Lady Flame to finish first on Saturday. She covered 400 meters in 57.35 seconds, stopping the clock .54 seconds in front of District of Columbia's Maurisa Williams.
Also having a solid meet on the women's side was junior Andrea Beckles (Lynchburg, Va.). She finished third in the women's 60-meter dash in 7.73, after qualifying for the ECAC Championships with her preliminary time of 7.72.
In the men's 60-meter dash, Durell Cull (So., Rome, N.Y.) finished third in a talented, 50-competitor field in 6.92. His effort ties him with teammate Jacey Bailey (Fr., Tamarac, Fla.) for fourth place on Liberty's all-time performance list. Both Cull and Bailey have now punched their tickets for the IC4A Championships.
Cull's high school teammate Matt Parker (Jr., Rome, N.Y.) also excelled on Saturday. He ran a personal-best 8.20 in the men's 60-meter hurdles, finishing fourth and becoming the Flames' second-fastest all-time performer in the event, behind Ken Howell. Now an IC4A qualifier in the hurdles, Parker later added a second-place finish in the men's high jump, on the strength of a 6-8.25 clearance.
Felicia Fant of Team Velocity won both the women's 60-meter dash (7.43) and 200-meter dash (24.70). Her latter clocking established a Tolsma Indoor Track Center record. Tomika Ferguson improved the facility women's triple jump standard, leaping 42-10.25. Finally, the men's 1,000-meter mark was lowered to 2:29.08, courtesy of Mary Washington's Matt Cash.
The meet's other double winner, in addition to Fant and Leineweber, was Dawn Cromer. Representing Brooks, she ran the mile in 4:56.60 and traversed 3,000 meters in 9:45.53.
Liberty will return to action Friday, when the Flames travel to Penn State's Horace Ashenfelter III Indoor Track for day one of the Sykes-Sabock Challenge Cup. The first event is scheduled for a 4:30 p.m. start.
