Andrea Beckles' third-place finish in the women's 60-meter dash and the performances of Jon Hart and Clendon Henderson in a loaded men's weight throw field marked Liberty's biggest highlights, Friday at the Sykes-Sabock Challenge Cup. The two-day scored meet is being hosted by Penn State at Horace Ashenfelter III Track.
Through seven events, the Lady Flames are in eighth place with 15 points. The host Nittany Lions lead the way with 63 markers. Meanwhile, the Liberty men's team, ranked No. 7 nationally, is ninth, after tallying eight points through the first six events. Penn State's 41 points rank first.
Beckles (Jr., Lynchburg, Va.) was one of three Liberty female athletes to score on Friday. She crossed the line third in the women's 60-meter dash in 7.72 seconds, after running a season-best 7.71 in the prelims.
The Lady Flames also scored in the day's longest running event, the 5,000 meters. Carol Jefferson (Sr., Schwenksville, Pa.) took fifth in a time of 17:39.05. Fellow senior Charlene Hibbert (Mississauga, Ontario), long jumping for the first time this season, reached 18-5 to claim fourth place.
In men's competition, the weight throw featured the deepest field of the day. The top five finishers all qualified provisionally for the NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships. Liberty seniors Hart (Wyomissing, Pa.) and Henderson (Meadow, Texas) came in fifth and seventh, respectively.
Hart, who was a member of the Penn State track & field team as a sophomore, made a successful return to his former home facility. The reigning ECAC Field Athlete of the Week recorded a 64-5.75 throw. Meanwhile, Henderson added 10 inches to his personal best, stretching the tape to 62-11.25.
The Flames' other two points came courtesy of Matt Parker (Jr., Rome, N.Y.), in the men's 60-meter hurdles final. Parker, who had tied for the third-fastest qualifying time (8.23) in the prelims, clocked an 8.29 to place seventh in the final.
Day two action at the Sykes-Sabock Challenge Cup will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday, with the men's pole vault, men's and women's high jump and men's shot put. Meanwhile, the men's weight throw will open Liberty's other meet this weekend, the VMI Winter Relays, at 8:30 a.m.
