Liberty junior Daniel Newell sits in second place in the heptathlon and freshman Krystle Matthews led the Lady Flames with her fourth-place pentathlon finish, during Friday's opening-day action at the On Track Open, held at the Tolsma Indoor Track Center.
Newell (Roanoke, Va.) did his finest work in the day's first and last events. He clocked the fastest 60-meter dash time (7.09) of the heptathletes and equaled the day's best high jump with a 6-4.25 clearance. Newell's score of 2,904 points has him on pace to eclipse his personal-best score—5,020.
Newell is also within striking distance of the leader, Curt McGill of South Carolina. McGill tallied 2,299 points in his four events, leaving him 95 points ahead of Newell.
In the pentathlon, a 9.66 time in the 60-meter hurdles and a 17-2 long jump helped propel Matthews (Chesapeake, Va.) past teammates Sheronica Henton (So., Raeford, N.C.) and Jennifer Healey (Fr., Virginia Beach, Va.), who finished fifth and sixth, respectively. Matthews' score of 3,043 is more than a 300-point increase from her collegiate debut, at the Nov. 30 Liberty Kickoff.
James Madison's Christine Nicewonger won her second pentathlon at Liberty this indoor season. The Liberty Kickoff titlist racked up 3,566 points, 364 more than runner-up Meredith Withers of Roanoke.
Two meet records were set during a light day of competition, both of which came at the 5,000-meter distance. High school senior Aurora Scott, the seventh-place finisher in the 2007 Foot Locker Cross Country Championships, competed unattached and won the women's 5K by nearly 50 seconds. Her time of 17:24.29 is a new On Track Open standard. Similarly, unattached athlete C.W. Moran took the men's 5K in a runaway, clocking a meet-record 14:31.62.
The second day of the On Track Open will begin with the men's weight throw at 8:30 a.m. The gun will go off at 11 a.m. for the first running event, the prelims of the women's 60-meter hurdles.
