Liberty sophomore Josh Edmonds and junior Rebekah Ricksecker have been named the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Men's and Women's Cross Country Runners of the Week, respectively, it was announced today.
Edmonds (Cooperstown, N.Y.) captured the honor for the first time in his career after winning the season-opening Virginia Tech Invitational last Saturday. His winning time of 18:32 on the 6K course put him 10 seconds clear of the race runner-up. Edmonds also improved teammate Josh McDougal's (Sr., Peru, N.Y.) course record by 23 seconds, although McDougal had run a different course layout.
The award is also the first of Ricksecker's (Laurel, Del.) career at Liberty, although the mid-distance specialist won the Big South Women's Outdoor Track & Field Athlete of the Week distinction on May 9. Ricksecker finished second at the Virginia Tech Invitational on Saturday, covering the 4K distance in 14:28. Teammate Kati Albright (Fr., Wake Forest, N.C.), competing unattached, was the only runner to defeat Ricksecker, edging the junior by one second.
Liberty will return to action this Saturday at the Longwood Invitational. The women's 5K race is set to begin at 11 a.m. and the men's 8K race will follow at 11:45. Both races will be held at the Longwood Golf Club in Farmville.
