The Liberty Lady Flames' tennis team's season ended Thursday, as the squad suffered a 4-1 defeat at the hands of High Point in the first round of the Big South Women's Tennis Championships.
High Point captured the doubles' point to take the early 1-0 lead. The Panthers' A.C. Talus and Kelly Tolman, named to the Big South All-Conference doubles team Wednesday night, won at No. 2 over the Lady Flames' Livia Branco and Ekaterina Kuznetsova. At No. 3 doubles, it was High Point's Iris Schabetsberger and Sarah McDonaugh prevailing by an 8-4 count, as they defeated Liberty's Kathy Waldthausen and Daniela Dimas.
In singles, four matches were needed to determine the contest's final outcome. McDonaugh claimed the initial singles match completed, as she defeated Dimas at No. 6. Liberty's Jonita Randolph, who captured conference Player of the Year honors Wednesday, cut the Panthers' lead to 2-1, as the senior defeated High Point's Talus at No. 1. The Panthers responded however, behind a Schabetsberger win at No. 5 and a Suzanne Celensu triumph at No. 2, to close out their 4-1 victory.
With the defeat, Liberty's season ends with a 5-12 mark and a 2-5 record in the Big South. Randolph's career ends as Liberty's all-time winningest player. The Townville, S.C., native leaves Liberty with 55 victories, sixteen of which came this season, during her final collegiate campaign. High Point's win moves them into the tournament's second round, and earns them a match-up with top-seeded Winthrop. The match between the Panthers and Lady Eagles will take place Friday at 10:30 a.m. on the campus of Radford University in Radford, Va.
