The Liberty Flames' tennis team's season came to an end Thursday, as the squad was defeated by the top-seeded Winthrop Eagles in the first round of the Big South Men's Tennis Championships, 4-0.
The Eagles swept the doubles point to jump out to a quick lead. The all-conference pairing of Germano Knorr and Rodrigo Santos won the No. 1 match, defeating the Flames' Jarda Trojan and Fabricio Picanco, 8-4. The next doubles contest to finish was No. 3, where Thiago Barbosa and Bastian Moldehn were victorious, overcoming Juan Reyes and Luis Olivera by an 8-4 count. In the final doubles match, Jorge Padilla and Alejandro Portugal knocked off Chad Simpson and Sebastian Pena, 8-5.
In singles, only three matches were contested to their conclusion. Santos, one of only two Big South men's players to be all-conference in both singles and doubles, defeated Trojan at No. 1. Barbosa then defeated Franco Valdez at No. 6, and Arthur Takahashi concluded the proceedings, and Liberty's season, by prevailing over Picanco in the No. 4 match.
With the defeat, Liberty's season ends with a 4-17 mark, and a 0-7 conference tally. Winthrop's win places them in the second round, and earns them a date with either High Point or Coastal Carolina on Friday.
