The Liberty Lady Flames tennis team was defeated by Elon, 5-2, in a non-conference contest played on Elon's home court in Elon, N.C., Saturday afternoon.
Due to forecasted troublesome weather in the area, the start time for the match was moved up two hours. When the match did began, the Phoenix, currently preparing for the upcoming Southern Conference Tournament, swept the doubles action to capture the day's opening point.
Singles competition featured a pair of Lady Flame triumphs, as both Jonita Randolph and Martyna Hanusz were victorious in their efforts. Randolph's win at No. 1 was her sixth-consecutive triumph, and her 15th victory overall for the season, making her 15-1 in her final collegiate campaign. The Townville, S.C., native defeated freshman Deanna Bailey, who owned a 15-6 record coming into the contest, for the win. Hanusz was a winner at No. 4, as the junior rallied after dropping the first set to dominate the final two, and claim her seventh singles victory on the season.
Despite the wins from two of Liberty's upperclassmen, the Phoenix were able to prevail in the remaining singles matches and wrap up their win.
The Lady Flames' record now stands at 5-11 overall and 2-5 in conference play. Liberty will return to action, playing its final match of the regular season, on Monday as the Lady Flames face UNC Greensboro in Greensboro, N.C. Match time is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
