Davidson Claims First Top 10 Finish at Hokie Open

Liberty freshman Kyle Davidson placed ninth at Saturday morning's Hokie Open, hosted by Virginia Tech, recording the best finish of his young career. Three other Liberty athletes competed unattached, while the rest of the Flames and Lady Flames took the weekend off from competition to prepare for next Saturday's NCAA Division I Southeast Regional Championships.
Davidson (Charlotte, N.C.) ran 11 seconds faster than he did on the same 6K course at the season-opening Virginia Tech Invitational on Sept. 8. His time of 20:15.2 placed ninth out of 15 competitors. Virginia Tech sophomore Chris Padilla led the way, breaking the tape in 18:48.4.
Competing unattached for the Flames were Mark Hopely (Fr., Lorney's Point, N.J.) and Joe Greer (Fr., Inglis, Fla.). Hopely completed the undulating course in 19:47.3 for seventh place and Greer took 11th, in a time of 20:32.0.
Liberty's lone representative in the women's 4K race was Melissa Martens (So., Baraboo, Wis.), also competing unattached. Martens, a transfer from Wisconsin-Whitewater, who is completing a year of residence at Liberty, placed sixth out of eight entrants. Her time was 16:14.6. Virginia Tech freshman Asia Washington was the overall winner, clocking a 15:05.5.
The full Liberty men's and women's squads will return to action next Saturday, at the NCAA Division I Southeast Regional Championships. The meet, which will provide the Flames and Lady Flames' final opportunities to qualify for the NCAA Division I National Championships, will be hosted by Louisville at E.P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park. The men's 10K championship will begin at 11 a.m., followed by the women's 6K championship at 12:15 p.m.
