Student-Athlete Q&A
What made Liberty University the right place for you to attend college/compete at the collegiate level?
I have loved Liberty University ever since I was in middle school, but I never seriously considered it because it was so far from home. When I came out for a visit it immediately felt at home. The coaches and teammates made it feel like the place I belonged. But the main moment I knew Liberty was for me, was when Coach Bingham showed me his desire for the team to pursue Christ over everything, including their athletic career. Liberty was set apart from every other school I went to because they prioritized the athletes’ relationship with Jesus over everything else. From that moment, I knew that my heart was in Liberty. But it was even more obvious when God opened door after door for me to be able to attend LU.
Is there anything special you do pregame or postgame and why?
I always read Philippians 1 because it is a great reminder that everything I do needs to be done for the benefit of the Kingdom of God. Philippians 1:27 says, "Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ...". This verse is a reminder for me to not compete for myself but for Christ! Reading Philippians helps calm some of those race nerves and anxieties of meet day. When I was younger and just starting my track career, I would get so nervous before my races. To help with those nerves my parents would tell me to say, "What time I am afraid I will trust in you, Lord." Now, every time I step in the blocks, I say this prayer to the Lord. For my post-game, I ALWAYS crave pizza!! Not just any kind of pizza though. I crave a wood fire pizza or a good stone pizza.
Who in your life inspires you and why are they such an inspiration?
I am so inspired by Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone. She just wrote an autobiography, and I read it this past spring. It was a very convicting and eye-opening book. Sydney talked a lot about her athletic career before she came to truly know the Lord and she compared it to now. She was very humble in admitting her need for growth. But what inspires me the most is her humility on the track. She is one of the greatest athletes alive, but she gives the glory to whom the glory belongs. When she breaks a world record (AGAIN) and all the press is interviewing her, she constantly turns it back to her Creator and gives Him all the glory. I am so inspired by her confidence and aspire to have the same passion for Christ.
What is your most memorable athletic moment/accomplishment?
I was at Junior Olympics Nationals in DesMoines, Iowa and I was competing in the Heptathlon. I was sitting in third place, and I was about to step on the track to run my last event, the dreaded 800m. I started the race and on the first curve I tripped and got trapped in the back and was in last place the whole race. The last 200m of the race I knew I needed to pick up the pace, so I sprinted the last stretch. I went from last place in the 800m to ending 5th place. Because of that, I became a Junior Olympian Silver Medalist!
If you picked your jersey/uniform number, why is that number important to you?
#1!! I was always #1 when I played sports as a kid!
Favorite meal (breakfast/lunch/dinner) and what is that special meal?
I LOVE pancakes (especially sweet potato pancakes with chocolate chips!) So, because of that I am a huge fan of breakfast for dinner. I usually make fried eggs and put them on avocado toast with hot sauce and have a stack of pancakes on the side.
What is the first app you check on your phone each day?
Either texts or Instagram.
What is your favorite hobby outside of athletics?
I love making coffee (Latte art, working at my coffee shop!).
Do you have any current pets (name and type of animal)?
I have a mini golden doodle named Solomon!
Who was your favorite athlete growing up?
Usain Bolt
What is your favorite possession and why?
My Bible. It belonged to my grandma before she passed away and it has all her old notes in it.
What is your Go-To karaoke song?
"Heads Carolina, Tails California"
What is your dream vacation spot and why?
Italy because of the food, coffee shops, and the scenery.
