Alex McLean returns to his alma mater as a men’s basketball graduate assistant after a nine-year professional basketball career in the international ranks. Prior to closing out his career in the Philippines, McLean also spent time playing in Poland, Paraguay, Lebanon, Argentina, Egypt and China.
A Big South first team all-conference selection in 2008, McLean averaged 15.1 points and 8.8 rebounds per game in two seasons (2007-08) with the Flames. The 6-8 forward ended his Liberty career with 954 career points, currently ranking him at 25th on the Flames’ all-time scoring list. McLean also collected 557 boards, making him 13th in the program’s career annals. The Bay Shore, N.Y., native garnered 27 double-doubles, the third-best career total in program history. Upon graduating Liberty, McLean earned a bachelor’s degree in sport management.
Before making his way to the Hill City, McLean played his first two seasons of collegiate basketball at Suffolk Community College. An all-region and all-conference honoree in 2006, McLean averaged 18.1 points, 13.9 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 2.1 blocks and 1.8 assists per game as a sophomore.
A graduate of Bay Shore High School, McLean did not play high school basketball. Listed at 6-2 as a high school senior, McLean played bass, piano and drums in the Bay Shore High School band. A concert bassist, McLean turned down the opportunity to study music at numerous schools on scholarship, including Cal-Berkley and Hofstra, as well as, receiving interest from Julliard.
