FCS Coaches Poll - Oct. 6
For the first time in school history, the Liberty Flames football program has been ranked inside the nation's Top 25 listing for five-consecutive weeks.
Liberty's five-point road victory over Big South rival Coastal Carolina on Saturday, helped the Flames climb to No. 15 in the Sports Network poll and No. 16 in the FCS Coaches poll, both of which were released earlier today. Last week, the Flames ranked No. 20 and 21, respectively, in the nation's premier FCS rankings.
This marks the fifth-straight week Liberty has cracked the Top 25 in the Sports Network poll and Liberty's fourth-consecutive national ranking in the FCS Coaches poll.
Liberty garnered Top 25 consideration for four-straight weeks during the 1989 and 1993 seasons. Following back-to-back victories over Top 20 programs James Madison and Eastern Illinois, Liberty ranked No. 9 on Oct. 28, 1989, highlighting the Flames' four-week run. Four years later, the Flames' peak ranking during the four-week span was No. 15 on Sept. 25, following three-straight wins to open up the 1993 campaign.
In other FCS rankings, the Flames made the largest leap of any team in the AnyGivenSaturday.com FCS rankings, moving up six spots from No. 22 to No. 16. In the weekly Sports Media Entertainment Top 25 poll, Liberty elevated itself four spots, climbing from No. 19 to No. 15 in the web site's sixth national ranking of the season.
Following a four-week stretch where Liberty played outside the Lynchburg area, the Flames return to Williams Stadium next weekend when they host Big South newcomer Stony Brook.
The contest, which is set for a 3:30 p.m. kickoff, will put the nation's second-longest home FCS winning streak on the line, as the Flames enter the game victors in their last 10 contests at Williams Stadium, dating back to the 2006 season.
