
Liberty's Gillespie Sets Bench Press Record

Liberty Head Strength and Conditioning Coordinator Bill Gillespie set his 34th world record last week at the World Association of Bencher and Deadlifters (WABDL) World Bench Press Championships held in Las Vegas, Nev.
Gillespie, who serves the athletic department as the director of strength and conditioning program, including the oversight of the weightlifting and conditioning efforts for the football, won his both his age group (47-53) and the open competition. Gillespie won both contests with a world record 711 pound lift. He broke the previous record by 61 pounds. Besides collecting his 34th world record, Gillespie won his 14th and 15th world bench press titles.
A bench press competitor for over 35 years, Gillespie has over 22 years of experience in strength and conditioning. After starting at Liberty as an assistant strength and conditioning coach from 1983-91, the Tacoma, Wash., native spent 11 years on the staff at Washington, where he was named the 1991 Pac-10 Strength and Conditioning Coach of the Year and was a finalist for National Strength and Conditioning Coach of the Year in 2001. He went on to serve as an assistant strength and conditioning coach with the Seattle Seahawks from 2003-2005, before returning to his alma mater Liberty in 2005.
"I would like to thank head football coach Danny Rocco for his support, not only in my lifting, but as a coach," stated Gillespie. I admire his leadership and he is my favorite coach that I have worked for during my career."
