Jennings Adds to Payton Award List Numbers

Following a week out of action after suffering a broken finger, Liberty's Rashad Jennings returned to the playing field and led the Flames' rushing attack against Western Carolina last Saturday, helping Liberty to a 19-16 road victory.
Jennings rushed for 116 yards on 28 carries, averaging 4.1 yards per rushing attempt against the Catamounts. The senior also finished with two receptions for three yards, helping the Flames extend the second-longest current FCS winning streak to eight games.
The 116-yard rushing performance marked the 14th 100-yard game of Jennings' three-year career at Liberty. The figure moved him into eighth place among active FCS running backs for 100-yard career games.
On the season, Jennings has rushed for 216 yards on 41 rushing attempts, giving the senior an 108.0 yards per game average after two contests. The Forest, Va., native has scored two rushing touchdowns, giving him 27 during his career, which places him third on the Big South all-time rushing touchdown list.
Jennings' rushing total has helped the Flames rank No. 12 nationally, as Liberty is averaging 223.3 rushing yards per game. The Flames also rank among the best FCS programs in the country offensively, as Liberty is No. 15 in scoring offense (37.33 points per game) and No. 17 in total offense (410.33 yards per game).
On Aug. 29, Jennings was one of 16 FCS student-athletes named to the preseason Walter Payton Award watch list. The award is given annually to the top offensive player among the FCS ranks.
Jennings was one of seven running backs named to the 16-player listing. Following three weekends of college football, Jennings ranks third in total rushing yards (216) among the seven running backs on the list and fourth in rushing touchdowns (2).
Western Illinois' Herb Donaldson leads the Walter Payton Award running back nominees, as the senior has rushed for 328 yards and five touchdowns over the first three games of the year. Colgate's Jordan Scott follows closely behind, having rushed for 303 yards and three touchdowns during the Raiders' trio of contests.
The Walter Payton Award watch list will be updated three times throughout the season, before voting takes place after the conclusion of the regular season. The list will be updated early in October and November, before being finalized on Nov. 24.
The top three finalists will be announced by the Sports Network on Dec. 1, while the winner will be announced at the Sports Network FCS Awards Dinner, held on the eve of the NCAA Division I Football Championship game (Dec. 18). Jennings is Liberty's first-ever football player to land a spot on the Walter Payton Award watch list.
