Véliz to Compete for Ecuador in Davis Cup this Weekend

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Liberty Men's Tennis Freshman Ángel Véliz will represent his native Ecuador in the Davis Cup this weekend against Great Britain this weekend in London, England. Veliz will be one of nine teenagers competing in the Davis Cup and one of four athletes who will be 18 years old or younger.
The matches in England will be on Sept. 19-20, on an indoor hard court. The winning country will qualify for the Final Eight to compete for the world title in November. The host country will field Cameron Norrie (ATP No. 35 in singles), Arthur Ferry (No. 37 in singles), Henry Patten (No. 1 in doubles), and Lloyd Glasspool (No. 13 in doubles).
Veliz qualified to represent Ecuador when he won four matches at the Davis Cup Qualifier in July. At the Guayaquil Tennis Club Annex, he defeated Lucas Yúnez 6-1, 6-1, and later beat Emilio Camacho 1-1 after his opponent retired due to a blister on his right foot. In the semifinals, Veliz defeated Felipe Rivadeneira 6-3, 6-3. In the final, he again defeated Camacho, this time 6-3, 6-2.
He will be the youngest player representing Team Ecuador this Fall. There will be a 19-year age gap between Veliz (ATP No. 1505) and the oldest member of the national team, Gonzalo Escobar (ATP No. 93). Veliz will also be joining a team with Andres Andrade (No. 203), Alvaro Guillen Meza (No. 293), Diego Hidalgo (No. 91).
Ecuador looks to build on arguably the biggest upset of the Davis Cup Qualifiers first round when they ousted Australia 3-1. The South American nation is the lowest-ranked team remaining in the tournament.
Veliz has stayed busy this Summer after signing with the Flames in April. He has competed in three M15 Quito events, compiling a 5-2 record in singles. Veliz reached the semifinals in the M15 Quito (April 20-26), highlighted by a Round of 16, 6-2, 6-2 triumph over No. 687, Nicolas Villalon. He also participated in the Quito ATP Challenger 50 in June.
