LYNCHBURG, Va. – Three Flames, Siwanat Auytayakul (Athlete of the Week) and David Ekpenyong and Benjamin Sparks (Doubles Pair of the Week) were named to the Conference USA Men's Tennis Players of the Week awards, the conference announced Wednesday.
Liberty, led by its award recipients, achieved a 2-0 week in a critical pair of home matches nearing the end of the regular season. The Flames topped No. 56 Old Dominion 4-2, before ousting Elon 5-2.
The honor marks Liberty's third CUSA weekly recognition for the team as Auytayakul receives his second CUSA Athlete of the Week honor of the season (March 11). Only Rodrigo Santiago Arraez (Feb. 11) has received a weekly CUSA award. Ekpenyong and Sparks both receive their first-ever CUSA honor.
Auytayakul went 2-0 at the top of the singles lineup. The sophomore held on to top ODU's Felix Obermair 6-3, 1-6, 6-1. Against Elon, he battled Veljko Krstic in a three-set battle, coming out on top after fighting off three match points 7-5, 3-6, 1-0 (9). Auytayakul improved to 9-9 for the season and 3-4 in the No. 1 singles slot.
