Zealand Blasts Record-Breaking 15:26.38 in 5K Track Debut
4/23/2026 10:02:00 PM | Track and Field
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Allie Zealand's first-ever 5K on the track was a smashing success, Thursday at the 130th Penn Relays. Liberty's sophomore All-American clocked 15:26.38 to win the race and break both the Penn Relays and program records.
Zealand's 15:26.38 took down a pair of long-standing standards during an electric performance at Franklin Field. Olympian PattiSue Plumer had owned the Penn Relays women's 5K record at 15:29.0 since 1984. Meanwhile, All-American Ednah Kurgat's 15:48.63 at the 2016 Mt. SAC Relays stood as the Liberty 5K record for a decade prior to Thursday.
Zealand surged to the lead at the 3K split and churned out a 4:49.05 final 1,600 and 2:20.90 last 800 to finally shake off runner-up Rylee Blade, who lowered the Florida State record to 15:29.45. The talented field Zealand defeated also featured reigning ACC indoor 5K champion Imogen Gardiner of Boston College and 2025 NCAA Northeast Region cross country champion Charlotte Richman of Army.
Zealand followed in her mother and coach's footsteps in fashioning a memorable performance at Franklin Field. Heather (Sagan) Zealand captured the Penn Relays Olympic Development women's mile title as a Liberty senior in 2002, earning Women's Top Individual Event Performer honors.
Zealand, whose 15:26.38 clocking ranks No. 11 in the NCAA this season, has now recorded NCAA Division I East First Rounds meet qualifiers in three different events. She did so in both the 800 (personal-best 2:04.17) and 1,500 (4:10.57) at last week's Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, Calif.
Sophie Gonzalez was only one spot away from winning a Penn Relays champion watch of her own on Thursday. The reigning CUSA Women's Field Athlete of the Week heaved the hammer 199-7 to finish second to Virginia's Charlotta Sandkulla in the event's championship section.
Raini Mayo and Sophia Park both posted big personal bests in the women's steeplechase. Mayo's 10:29.22 effort lopped 19 seconds off the sophomore's previous best and ranks No. 4 in program history. She joins All-American Calli Doan as the only Lady Flames ever to dip under 10:30 as sophomores.
Running about an hour away from her hometown of North Brunswick, N.J., Park finished in 10:36.80, improving her top time by 10 seconds. The junior, who entered the year with a 10:58.95 personal best, moves up to No. 6 all-time for the Lady Flames.
Liberty's lone men's athlete to compete on the meet's opening day, Josh Blalock won his heat of the men's 400 hurdles and placed 14th of 39 overall in 52.43.
