
Liberty Comes up Short at Elon, Wake Forest

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Liberty (5-3) was unable to overcome two challenging opponents on the road over the weekend, falling to Elon (2-1) 4-2 on Friday and Wake Forest (5-3) by the same score on Saturday.
Against Elon, Liberty secured singles victories at the No. 1 and No. 6 positions but was unable to capture the doubles point. Elon claimed the doubles point with wins at No. 2 doubles and No. 3 doubles. Madison Cordisco and Helen Sarikulaya defeated Daniella O'Neill and Milana Tsulygina, 6-4, on court two, while Cornelia Kack and Lisa Kranec earned a 6-3 victory over Celina Joseph and Candy Wai at No. 3 doubles. The No. 1 doubles match between Maria Turchetto and Yoanna Radulova of Liberty and Simone Bergeron and Mariana Redding of Elon ended unfinished at 5-5.
The Phoenix extended their lead with a 6-1, 6-1 win by Alexis Nyborg over Wai at No. 5 singles, followed by Kack's 6-3, 6-0 triumph against Radulova at No. 2 singles. Elon clinched the match when Redding won against Tsulygina, 7-6(0), 6-3, on court four. Kranec added another point for the Phoenix with a 6-1, 7-6 (2) victory over Turchetto at No. 3 singles. Liberty gained points with victories in the last two completed singles matches. At No. 6 singles, Joseph edged Cordisco, 7-5, 6-4, and at No. 1 singles, O'Neill defeated Bergeron, 7-6(4), 6-2. Despite these late wins, the Flames fell to the Phoenix with a final score of 5-2.
On Saturday at Wake Forest, Liberty again was unable to secure the doubles point. The Demon Deacons claimed it with victories on courts two and one. The duo of Evie Oxford and Sankavi Gownder secured a 6-0 win at No. 2 doubles over O'Neill and Tsulygina. Nevena Carton and Kady Tannenbaum followed with a 6-3 victory against Radulova and Turchetto at No. 1 doubles. The match on court three, featuring Wai and Joseph against Heidi Bulger and Aubrey Nisbet, was left unfinished at 4-3.
In singles action, Liberty evened the match as Tsulygina delivered a 6-4, 6-4 victory against Bulger on court four. Wake Forest expanded its lead with Carton's tight 7-6 (7), 6-3 win over O'Neill on court one. Oxford added to Wake Forest's tally with a 7-6 (7), 6-0 triumph over Wai at No. 5 singles. Radulova of Liberty picked up a three-set win at No. 2 singles, defeating Krystal Blanch 6-4, 2-6, 6-2.
Wake Forest clinched the match as Tannenbaum emerged victorious in a marathon three-set battle at No. 3 singles, defeating Turchetto 7-6(7), 2-6, 7-6 (8), despite Turchetto battling back from down 5-2 in the third set and fighting off seven match points. The final point came from Gownder, who closed out the match with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Joseph at No. 6 singles.
No Lady Flame secured two singles matches over the weekend as Liberty went 0-4 in doubles.
