CLEMSON, S.C. – Liberty's Gilles Ouedraogo continued the blazing start to his collegiate career at the Tiger Paw Invitational on Saturday, setting the men's triple jump program record for the third consecutive meet. This time, he produced the Flames' first-ever 16-meter triple jump (52-7.25, 16.03m), indoors or out.
Day 2 Recap
Ouedraogo waited until round six to unleash his 52-7.25 effort, shattering his own indoor record of 51-8.25 from the Brant Tolsma Elite Invitational on Jan. 30 and placing third in the competition. Prior to Saturday, the top triple jump performance by a Flame in any venue had been Clarence Powell's outdoor 52-1.25 leap on May 29, 2010 at the NCAA Division I East Preliminary Round meet.
Ouedraogo has broken the Liberty indoor triple jump standard in each of his first three appearances in a Flames uniform. The Burkina Faso native started out at 51-7.75 at the Liberty Open (Jan. 23) before improving to 51-8.25 at the Brant Tolsma Elite Invitational (Jan. 30) and now 52-7.25 on Saturday at Clemson.
Ouedraogo is now tied for No. 19 nationally this year. The top 16 men's triple jumpers at season's end will qualify for the NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships.
Ouedraogo became Liberty's second men's horizontal jumper to set a school record in as many days in Clemson. Markus White long jumped a program-record 25-6.25 on Friday.
Joshua Smith, who owned the Liberty record at 51-3.5 before Ouedraogo began his record-breaking spree, also qualified for Saturday's men's triple jump final. He finished ninth at 49-2.25.
Trevor Veenstra (fifth place, men's shot put, personal-best 59-2.25) and Kellen Kimes (sixth, men's weight throw, 67-4.75) each fared well in the invite sections of their respective events. Veenstra added an inch to his previous personal best on two of his six attempts, solidifying his place atop the CUSA leaderboard.
Mahogany Mobley was the Lady Flames' top performer on the day, lowering her indoor 200 best to 24.30 for No. 7 in program history. On Friday, Mobley had improved her indoor 400 personal best to 54.54, ranking No. 4 all-time for the Lady Flames in that event.
