During the month of October and the start of November, Liberty's NCAA student-athletes once again participated in Trick or Treat so Others Can Eat. This Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) initiative has helped meet the needs of food-insecure residents of the Lynchburg community and its surrounding area for over 15 years.
This year, Liberty student-athletes collected 8,698 non-perishable food items that were distributed to two local food pantries, one school that faces food insecurity and the on-campus commuter food pantry. Additionally, food items were donated to Big Brothers Big Sisters, a local organization that distributes food to the homeless. After gathering the donated items, Liberty student-athletes packed and hand-delivered the items to the locations during the first week of November.
All 20 Liberty NCAA programs reached their target goals for Trick or Treat so Others Can Eat. This year, the Liberty Clubs Sports wrestling team participated in the initiative as well, collecting 1,013 items.
Since the initiative's establishment in 2010, Liberty's NCAA Division I student-athletes have collected nearly 52,000 canned goods and non-perishable food items for local food pantries in the Lynchburg area.
Liberty student-athletes give their time and effort to demonstrate love and care by serving the local community throughout each school year. Using the NCAA Athletics platform, Liberty's student-athletes make a difference in the lives of individuals of all ages in both the public and private sectors.
"Love. Care. Serve."Â is the promise Liberty student-athletes have for each other and the Lynchburg community, with the goals of demonstrating love, caring for those in need and serving with a grateful heart.
