
Lady Flames Defeat Penn State at Virginia Tech Tri Meet

CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. – Liberty defeated Penn State in a swimming & diving tri meet which wrapped up on Saturday, hosted by Virginia Tech at Christiansburg Aquatic Center.
The Lady Flames beat Penn State 240-111, while Liberty fell to Virginia Tech, 240-113. The Hokies defeated the Nittany Lions, 312-41.
Liberty opens its season with a 1-1 record, while Virginia Tech is 2-0 and Penn State, 0-2.

The Lady Flames will host both Rutgers and James Madison for a tri meet on Oct. 16-17 at Liberty Natatorium.

- This weekend's meet features a two-day format, with team point totals carrying over until tomorrow.
- For the meet, Virginia Tech won two relays, both diving events and six swimming races. Meanwhile, the Lady Flames posted two relay wins while claiming six swimming events.
- Virginia Tech won the 200 free relay, three-meter diving and three individual swimming events, while the Lady Flames won the 400 medley relay and three individual swimming races.
- Liberty's trio of Gwyneth Frick (first place in 100 back, 200 IM and 200 back), Aly Bozzuto (first place in 100 breaststroke, second place in 100 free and 50 free) and Riley Leach (first place in 400 IM, second place in 200 fly, third place in 200 IM) picked up three top-three finishes each.
- Liberty sophomore Sadie Huenefeld swam a 22.09 anchor leg in the 200 medley relay.
- The closest finish of the day came in the 50 freestyle, with Tech's Alexandra Hrncarova winning in 22.72 and Aly Bozzuto (22.85) placing second.
- Liberty freshman Elizabeth Ann Hobby placed fourth in one-meter diving, scoring 235.40.
- Today marked Liberty's first-ever win over Penn State in swimming & diving and first win over a Big Ten team since Oct. 25, 2013 at Michigan State.
- Current Liberty head coach Jake Shellenberger was as assistant coach at Penn State for three years, while associate head coach Jessica Barnes swam for the Nittany Lions.
