LYNCHBURG, Va. – Liberty swept all six of this week's CUSA track & field awards, thanks to a successful showing at The Burg Open. The Flames' honorees include Rachel Hill (Women's Track Athlete of the Week), Katie Urbine (Women's Field Athlete of the Week), Kona Moore (Women's Freshman of the Week), Jacob Tarkington (Men's Track Athlete and Freshman of the Week) and Chase Johnson (Men's Field Athlete of the Week).
All of these athletes captured their respective awards for the first time except Urbine. The All-American pole vaulter is now a three-time CUSA Women's Field Athlete of the Week for her career, following her honors on Jan. 23, 2024 and Jan. 30, 2024.
A sophomore from Dunnellon, Fla., Hill successfully defended her The Burg Open women's title on Friday. Her winning time was a personal-best 4:57.16 (No. 3 in CUSA this season). Hill was also the women's 800 runner-up (placing first among collegiate athletes) in 2:16.75 (No. 4 in CUSA).
A junior from Quarryville, Pa., Urbine shared first place in the women's pole vault competition. Her 12-9.5 clearance equaled her season best and is tied for No. 2 in CUSA this year.
A Lynchburg, Va., native, Moore came in fourth in the women's pole vault in her collegiate debut at 11-3.75. That mark is tied for No. 8 in CUSA this season, including second among freshmen.
A native of Johns Creek, Ga., Tarkington won the men's 800 in a Liberty freshman record time of 1:50.76, good for No. 2 in program history. That impressive effort leads CUSA and ranks No. 10 nationally this season (No. 2 among freshmen).
A freshman from Flower Mound, Texas, Johnson was The Burg Open men's pole vault champion with a Liberty freshman record clearance of 16-11. That ranks No. 1 in CUSA and No. 25 nationally this season (first among freshmen) and puts Johnson No. 5 on the Flames' all-time pole vault list.
Liberty will take to the road for its next competition, the Virginia Tech Invitational. The two-day event is slated for Jan. 16-17 at Rector Field House in Blacksburg, Va.
