LYNCHBURG, Va. – Liberty's Kellen Kimes was voted the CUSA Men's Track & Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year by the league's Faculty Athletics Representatives (FAR) on Thursday.
The Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards, voted on by the conference's 10 FARs, are presented to the top student-athletes in each conference-sponsored sport based on academic achievement (GPA), athletic achievement and service.
Kimes is the second Liberty men's thrower to earn this honor in as many years. Teammate Ben Shughart was the 2024 CUSA Men's Track & Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
A sophomore from Ludington, Mich., Kimes maintains a 4.0 GPA as a biomedical sciences major. This is his second academic recognition this week, following inclusion on the CSC Academic All-District® team Tuesday. Kimes was previously voted to the CUSA All-Academic Team for track & field.
In competition, Kimes placed 24th in the men's hammer during his debut at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships. He was recently voted CUSA Men's Field Athlete of the Year after winning the men's weight throw title and placing second in the men's hammer. His 70-5.75 weight throw at the Liberty Open shattered the previous program record and ranked No. 1 nationally among freshmen.
