
Metheny Receives 1st Career CUSA Player of Week Award

LYNCHBURG, Va. – After a 25-point effort in Sunday's 97-94 overtime win at FIU, Liberty guard Kaden Metheny has been named the Conference USA Men's Basketball Player of the Week.
This is Metheny's first career CUSA Player of the Week award and Liberty's second award of the season. Zach Cleveland earned the other honor on Nov. 10. The Flames are one of two teams in the league with multiple CUSA Player of the Week recipients this season, along with Middle Tennessee.
Metheny delivered his second 25-plus point effort of the season with 25 points on 8-of-15 shooting against the Panters while knocking down a season-high six three-pointers on 13 attempts. The redshirt senior also tallied six assists in the contest, his second-highest total of the season. Metheny added a season-high three steals as well.
Metheny scored seven (most on team in OT) of his 25 points in overtime, including the three-pointer that put the Flames ahead for good, 92-91, with 1:06 left. He also hit a go-ahead triple to put the Flames ahead 92-89 with 2:42 left in the extra session.
Metheny had a strong second half with 13 points and three triples in the final 20 minutes of regulation. He drilled a crucial three with 3:36 left to give the visitors a 76-75 edge and knocked down a pair of free throws for a 78-77 lead with 2:52 remaining.
Metheny played 41:25 of a possible 45 minutes in Sunday's CUSA opener. Metheny and the Flames (9-3, 1-0 CUSA) are on a three-game winning streak and sport a 1-0 CUSA record for the first time.
The Morgantown, W, Va. native is up to 34 makes from long distance on the year, third most in Conference USA. The guard is averaging 14.3 points per game, second best on the team. Metheny ranks No. 11 nationally and first in CUSA in assist/turnover ratio (4.44).
This is Metheny's second career conference player of the week award. He was tabbed the MAC Player of the Week on Feb. 23, 2021 while competing for Bowling Green.
Metheny and the Flames (9-3, 1-0 CUSA) will play their CUSA home opener against Kennesaw State (8-4, 0-1 CUSA) in a nationally-televised game on ESPNU, Friday night at Liberty Arena. Tip time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
