Flames Drop Overtime Game at LA Tech
11/22/2025 7:44:00 PM | Football
With the loss, Liberty falls to 4-7 on the year and 3-4 in Conference USA action. The loss ends Liberty's effort to extend its bowl game streak. The Flames will fail to qualify for a bowl game for the first time since becoming bowl eligible in 2019 (six-straight bowl games reached).
Conversely, the overtime thriller for LA Tech allowed the Bulldogs to qualify for their 15th bowl game in program history. With the win, LA Tech moves to 6-5 on the year and 4-3 in CUSA play.
Liberty held a 28-7 lead midway through the third quarter; however, the Flames turned the ball over three times during the second half and once more in overtime to drop the road game.
Running back Evan Dickens tried to carry the Flames to the victory himself, rushing for a career-high 228 yards on 30 carries with two rushing touchdowns.
This was Dickens' second 200-yard game of the 2025 season and his fourth-straight 100-yard rushing performance.
Ethan Vasko finished the night completing 8-of-21 passing attempts for 141 yards with one passing touchdown. However, all four of Liberty's late game turnovers were Vasko interceptions, including one to end Liberty's possession in overtime. LA Tech would then score on its first offensive play from scrimmage in overtime, sealing the Bulldogs' win.
The closeness of the game was reflected in the final stat sheet. LA Tech just edged out Liberty in total offensive yards (437 to 424).
The Flames managed to rush for 283 yards on Conference USA's top-ranked rushing defense, as LA Tech came into the game allowing 129.9 rushing yards per game.
Liberty had three defenders finish the game with double digit tackles, including career-high efforts by linebacker Micah Pollard (14 tackles) and defensive lineman Nathan Pirolli (10 tackles). Fellow linebacker Derrell Farrar also finished with 10 stops.

Play-By-Play Breakdown:
First Quarter
- LA Tech kept the ball on the ground 11 times during a 13-play, 75-yard scoring drive to take a 7-0 lead with 8:23 left in the first quarter. Running back Andrew Burnette capped the scoring drive with a sweeping eight-yard run to the right side of the field.
- Liberty tried to respond on the next drive, but its 12-play, 60-yard drive stalled in the red zone, forcing the Flames to settle for a 33-yard field goal by Jay Billingsley at 2:22. Liberty picked up a fourth-down conversion near midfield, but was stopped on third down from the LA Tech 11-yard line.
- Big runs by the Flames on their second possession of the game, including a 36-yarder by Evan Dickens, allowed the visitors to get back into the red zone. However, Liberty's effort came up short again, forcing Billingsley to come back on for a 23-yard field goal at 11:12 to trim the deficit to one, 7-6.
- The contest's first turnover allowed the Flames to take their first lead of the game. Damond Harmon picked off an Andrew Burnette pass over the middle of the field and returned it 26 yards. Three plays later, Evan Dickens scored his team-leading 11th rushing touchdown of the season from two yards out, giving Liberty a 13-7 edge at 9:00.
- The Flames quickly extended their lead on the opening drive of the second half, moving 75 yards downfield on six plays. Dickens scored for the second time in the game, finishing the drive with a two-yard touchdown run with 13:10 left to play in the quarter, pushing Liberty's lead to 20-7.
- Following a three-and-out stop by the Flames, Liberty's ground game set up the contest's first passing touchdown. On a third-and-four play from the LA Tech six-yard line, Ethan Vasko found Jacob Jenkins open for a six-yard scoring strike. The tight end's second touchdown reception of the year gave Liberty a 28-7 lead at the 7:39 mark following a two-point conversion.
- LA Tech responded on the following drive, cutting Liberty's lead to two scores, 28-14, at the 4:14 mark. The Bulldogs went for it on a fourth-and-three and Kukuk broke free for a 31-yard touchdown run to halt Liberty's third-quarter momentum.
- Following a Vasko interception, LA Tech pieced together a 19-play, 96-yard scoring drive that ate up 8:17 on the clock and pulled the home team within a score, 28-21. The drive included four third-down conversions, including one on a Burnette three-yard rushing touchdown with 10:24 left to play in the game.
- Vasko's second interception led to the Bulldogs' game-tying scoring drive. Four straight short gains on the ground set up a 29-yard rushing touchdown by Kukuk to tie the game 28-28 with 7:05 to play the fourth quarter.
- LA Tech tried to end the game on the last play of regulation, but John Hoyet Chance's 54-yard field goal attempt hit off the right upright as time expired.
- On the second play of overtime, Vasko tried to get the ball into the end zone with a lengthy pass play, but the throw resulted in the redshirt junior's fourth interception of the game.
- On the next play, Burnette broke free up the middle for a 25-yard touchdown run to end the game.
