UTEP Snaps Liberty’s 10-Match Winning Streak With Sweep

EL PASO, Texas - In a match featuring two teams with unbeaten CUSA records, UTEP swept Liberty 3-0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-18) on Friday at Memorial Gym.
The Miners (13-2, 3-0 CUS) won their fourth match in a row. Meanwhile, the Lady Flames fall to 14-2, 2-1 in Conference USA play after seeing their 10-match winning streak come to a close.

The Miners (13-2, 3-0 CUS) won their fourth match in a row. Meanwhile, the Lady Flames fall to 14-2, 2-1 in Conference USA play after seeing their 10-match winning streak come to a close.
Notable Numbers
- UTEP outhit Liberty .286-.202. The hosts also led in kills (44-35), aces (5-2) and digs (34-30), while the Lady Flames held a 9-6 advantage in blocks.
- Three Miners reached double figures in kills, led by Landry Braziel (12 kills, .500). Sara Pustahija scored 11 kills, while Kaya Weaver sent down 10 kills at a .533 pace. Mattie Gantt dished out 18 assists, while Alexia Massey served up a match-high three aces and Fuka Sekita led all players with 12 digs.
- Paige Overcash scored a match-high 13 kills for the Lady Flames, with Carly O'Brien sending down nine kills. Zoe Hall posted a match-high eight blocks, while Alison Bierwagen turned in a match-high 23 assists, six digs and a career-high four blocks. Shyia Richardson collected nine digs.
- The Lady Flames battled back from a 24-18 deficit in the second set, with Zoe Hal posting three block assists and a kill during a 5-0 Liberty spurt that narrowed the gap to 24-23. However, UTEP's Luvina Oguntimehin sealed the set with a kill coming out of the timeout.
- Liberty built an early 6-2 lead in the third set, one which featured eight ties and five lead changes. The hosts pulled away for the 25-18 win.
- UTEP is now 7-0 all-time against Liberty in volleyball, with all seven wins coming since Liberty joined CUSA prior to the 2023 season.
- Hall followed up her career-high nine blocks on Saturday against Louisiana Tech with eight blocks tonight.
- Liberty's 10-match winning streak was its longest since winning 12 straight matches, Oct. 14 through Nov. 18, 2022.
- Tonight's match was the only contest on the Conference USA slate which featured two teams with a 2-0 CUSA record coming into the match.
- Liberty and BYU are tied for the most wins of any NCAA Division I volleyball team so far this season, both standing at 14-2 after tonight.
