LYNCHBURG, Va. – Former Liberty Flames second baseman Will Wagner has been added to the Toronto Blue Jays' active roster for the Blue Jays' game this evening against the Los Angeles Angels at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, Calif.
Wagner becomes the eighth former Flame and the second this season to reach the majors. Wagner's 2021 teammate at Liberty, pitcher Fraser Ellard, made his MLB debut earlier season with the Chicago White Sox on July 30.
The infielder joins former Flames Ellard (2024), Ryan Cordell (2018-20), Ian Parmley (2017), Doug Brady (1995), Randy Tomlin (1986-88), Sid Bream (1979-81) and Lee Guetterman (1978-81) in reaching the majors. Parmley made his MLB debut with Toronto in June of 2017.
Wagner played four seasons at Liberty (2018-21), earning ASUN All-Conference first team honors in 2019 and 2021. The Crozet, Va., played in 135 games and started 126 during his Liberty career. He hit .305 with 94 RBI and 77 runs scored during his time on the Mountain.
The infielder was selected in the 18th round of the 2021 MLB Draft by the Houston Astros. Toronto acquired Wagner from the Astros at this year's trade deadline. In 70 games with Houston's Triple-A affiliate, he hit .307 and posted a .853 on-base plus slugging percentage. Since arriving at Buffalo, the Blue Jays' Triple-A affiliate, he went 10-for-25 with more walks than strikeouts.
