Doan, Chelanga and Waters to Compete in U.S. Olympic Trials

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Liberty's Calli Doan, along with former Flames standouts Sam Chelanga and Carson Waters, will take part in the 2024 U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Track & Field. The event will run from Friday through June 30 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.
Chelanga (men's 10K final) and Waters (men's pole vault qualifying) will get things started on Friday, the opening day of competition in Oregon. Doan will begin her first U.S. Olympic Trials experience with the women's steeplechase prelims on Monday.
At stake will be qualifying berths into the Summer Olympics in Paris, France. Track & field events are slated for Aug. 1-11 at Stade de France. The top three finishers in each event in Eugene will move on to Paris, provided they have met the Olympics qualifying standard or own a high enough world ranking.
Live TV coverage of the meet will be split between NBC (men's 10K final and women's steeplechase prelims), USA (women's steeplechase final) and Peacock (men's pole vault).

Notable:
- A four-time NCAA national champion at Liberty, Chelanga will compete in the men's 10K at the U.S. Olympic Trials for the third time. He previously placed sixth in 2016 and eighth in 2021.
- Chelanga, who is now sponsored by Saucony, will face Northern Arizona's Nico Young, who broke Chelanga's collegiate men's 10K record from 2010 earlier this year.
- Doan will compete at Hayward Field for the second time this month. She closed out her collegiate career by placing 10th in the NCAA women's steeplechase final on June 8, setting a new program record (9:49.54) and collecting her third All-America honor.
- Doan is one of seven NCAA steeplechase finalists who will be part of the 30-member field in Eugene, joining national runner-up Olivia Markezich (Notre Dame), Janette Schraft (Iowa State), Sophie Novak (Notre Dame), Karrie Baloga (Northern Arizona), Taylor Lovell (BYU) and Emma Tavella (Boston College).
- Waters will pole vault at the U.S. Olympic Trials for the second time. He finished 11th in the event in 2021. His successful 2024 campaign has included a personal-best 18-9.25 clearance at the Don Kirby Elite Invitational in February.
- The Olympic qualifying standards in Liberty's events include 27:00 in the men's 10K, 9:23 in the women's steeplechase and 19-1 (5.82m) in the men's pole vault.
