LYNCHBURG, Va. – Current Liberty athletes Omari Lewis (Trinidad and Tobago men's 4 x 100) and Reese Webster (Trinidad and Tobago women's 4 x 100) along with former Flames All-American Alejandro Perlaza Zapata (Colombia mixed 4 x 400) will compete in the World Athletics Relays, May 4-5 at Thomas A. Robinson Stadium in Nassau, Bahamas.
Relay squads from 54 nations will head to the Bahamas, where Olympic qualifying places will be up for grabs. On the first day (May 4), the top two teams in each heat will advance to the final on day two (May 5), while also securing their qualification for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. In the finals on day two, teams will compete for prize money and obtain Olympic lane seeding positions.
All other teams will compete on day two in the additional round where the top two teams in each heat will also qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
The May 4 events will be televised on Peacock, beginning with the mixed 4 x 400 heats at 7:05 p.m. Eastern followed by the women's 4 x 100 heats at 7:50 and the men's 4 x 100 heats at 8:25.
The May 5 races will be televised on both Peacock and CNBC, starting at 7:05 p.m. Eastern.
Perlaza Zapata is hoping to qualify for his third Olympics after previously representing Colombia in both the Rio 2016 (men's 4 x 400) and Tokyo 2020 (men's 400 and 4 x 400) editions.
Both Lewis and Webster will look to make their Olympics debuts in Paris this summer, where track & field events are scheduled for Aug. 1-11 at Stade de France.
Lewis and Liberty teammate Revell Webster (Reese's brother) previously represented Trinidad and Tobago in the men's 4 x 100 relay at the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary, placing 12th.
Lewis and Reese Webster will have a busy couple weeks to begin the month of May. After returning from the Bahamas, they will get ready to travel to El Paso, Texas for the CUSA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, slated for May 10-12 at UTEP's Kidd Field.
