
Liberty Divers Complete Day 1 at Zone Championships

PRINCETON, N.J. – Liberty sophomore Mary Herndon placed 28th on one-meter springboard, highlighting Liberty's day-one participation at the NCAA Zone A Diving Championships, Monday at DeNunzio Pool.
Herndon, senior Maddie Freece and freshman Caroline Stamps are competing to earn a spot in the 2024 NCAA Division I Women's Swimming & Diving Championships, which will be held in Athens, Ga., March 20-23. Freece will compete on three-meter tomorrow, while freshman Shannon Icard will contest platform diving on Wednesday.

Freece will compete on three-meter springboard tomorrow. The preliminary round for three-meter diving begin at 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., with the top 18 scores advancing to finals.

- Sr. Maddie Freece – One-meter diving (6) – 241.90 (30th place in prelims)
- Fr. Caroline Stamps – One-meter diving (6) – 219.20 (52nd place in prelims)
- During this week's three-day meet, the top 18 from prelims each day qualify for evening finals. The top six combined scores from prelims and finals in one-meter diving qualify for the 2024 NCAA Division I Women's Swimming & Diving Championships.
- This year, it took 252.50 points to qualify for the Zone A Diving final on one-meter springboard. Daphne Wills of Penn State posted the top qualifying score today with 315.65.
- Today's event featured 80 divers. The divers represent schools from Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia.
- Stamps is the sixth Liberty freshman diver to compete at NCAA Zone Championships, joining Lauren Chennault (2019), Abigail Egolf-Jensen (2019), Olivia Robinson (2019), Maddie Freece (2021) and Mary Herndon (2023).
- This is the sixth straight NCAA postseason appearance for Liberty's divers. The Lady Flames are attempting to send the first Liberty diver to compete in the NCAA Division I Women's Swimming & Diving Championships.
