LYNCHBURG, Va. – The host Flames set three school records among their nine event victories during a successful showing at the Liberty Open. Reese Webster (women's 60 – 7.32 and 200 – 23.69) and John Hicks (men's weight throw – 67-1.25) were the Flames' record setters on Saturday at the Brant Tolsma Indoor Track at the Liberty Indoor Track Complex.
Megan Mann (women's shot put and weight throw) was also a double event winner, while Maddy Merritt (women's 400), Warren Barrett (men's shot put) and Shane Wang (men's triple jump) posted one first-place finish apiece.
The women's shuttle hurdles relay team of Ahvon Mitchell, Indea Cartwright, Nimeesha Coleman and Amani Hankton got the morning started off with a victory in 36.18.
Women's Meet Recap
Remarkably, Webster has now set a Liberty record in five of her seven individual races as a Lady Flame, including prelims.
The 60 was her first record of the day, as the Trinidad and Tobago's winning time of 7.32 improved her standard of 7.37 from the Virginia Tech Invitational on Jan. 12.
About four hours later, Webster cruised to victory in the 200 in 23.69. That effort shattered her 23.93 clocking from the Brant Tolsma Invitational on Jan. 19. Her nearest competitor in the one-lap race was teammate Cartwright in an indoor personal-best 24.45. That ties the talented hurder with Ty'Asia Dansbury for sixth all-time at Liberty on the women's 200 chart.
The first of Mann's two triumphs came in the women's weight throw, where she led a 1-2-3 Liberty sweep. Mann (60-10.5) and runner-up Efe Latham (57-0.75) both set new personal bests, with Latham adding more than 2.5 feet to her previous best. Sofia Mojica (55-6.5) followed in third.
Mann (47-9) and Latham (season-best 41-10) later produced a 1-2 finish in the women's shot put, the evening's final field event.
The Lady Flames also claimed the top two places in the women's 400, thanks to Merritt (season-best 57.48) and Dawn Hilton (season-best 57.67). It was the first collegiate victory for Merritt, a true freshman.
Mitchell, Cartwright, Coleman and Hankton won the rarely-contested shuttle hurdles relay by six seconds in 36.18. Mitchell gave Liberty a lead it did not relinquish with an impressive 8.37 opening leg.
Mia Bowers was the top collegiate finisher in the women's pole vault, clearing a season-best 12-7.5 for second place overall.
Jamie Anderson produced the performance of the day for the Lady Flames' distance crew, cutting 11 seconds off her 3K best to place fourth in 10:16.34.
Men's Meet Recap
Hicks and Desmond Coleman got the morning started with some fireworks in the men's weight throw. Coleman unleashed a 66-4.25 throw in round two, adding a foot and a half to his personal best and taking over the lead.
Coleman remained on top until the next-to-last attempt of the competition. That's when Hicks launched the weight 67-1.25 for a nearly 1.5-foot personal best of his own, a first-place finish and a new Liberty record.
Jon Hart had owned the Flames' men's weight throw standard of 66-6.5 since the Big South Championship on March 1, 2008 at Clemson.
All-American Barrett removed the drama from the men's shot put, winning by nearly eight feet with his 63-0.25 effort. He has still not lost to a collegiate competitor in four starts this season.
Competing for the first time in two months, Wang won the men's triple jump with a season-best 47-11.25 performance.
Rayshawn Johnson became the first Flame ever to compete in the 400 hurdles indoors, placing fifth overall in 1:00.24.
