BLACKSBURG, Va. – Racing for the first time in 5.5 months, Liberty's Tristian Merchant finished as the men's 3K runner-up at the Virginia Tech Challenge, Saturday at Rector Field House.
Merchant's time of 8:14.41 made him the top collegiate performer among the field of 34 runners on Saturday. It ranks No. 5 in CUSA this season, giving the Flames six of the conference's top eight performers in the event.
Merchant had enjoyed an impressive start to cross country season, racing to an individual victory at the Eye Opener on Sept. 1. However, he then suffered an injury which sidelined him for the rest of cross country and most of the indoor track & field campaign.
The Alaska native did some pacing work for his teammates at last weekend's Darius Dixon Memorial Invitational before completing a race of his own on Saturday in Blacksburg.

Liberty will prepare for its first Conference USA Indoor Track & Field Championships appearance. The meet will take place Feb. 23-24 at the Brant Tolsma Indoor Track at the Liberty Indoor Track Complex.
