Competing in her first outdoor track race since 2021, Liberty All-American Calli Doan lowered her 1,500 personal best to 4:17.10, Friday at the Raleigh Relays. Her effort at the Paul Derr Track Facility enabled Doan to join her coach (Heather Zealand) as the only Lady Flames ever to break 4:20 in the event.
Doan’s previous 1,500 best (4:20.54) was achieved the last time she contested the event, at the 2021 ASUN Outdoor Track & Field Championships. She shaved more than three seconds off that time on Friday to place 10th of 185 runners across 15 sections of the event and five seconds ahead of any other ASUN Conference athlete in the field.
Doan’s time makes her the first Lady Flame to qualify to the NCAA Division I East Preliminary Round meet this season. Zealand is the only Liberty runner ever to go faster than 4:17.10, running 4:14.71 while placing as the 2002 NCAA national runner-up.
The Lady Flames’ next two fastest 1,500 runners on the day were freshmen, in Katie Sigerud (4:32.03) and Jessica Palisca (4:36.72). Sigerud shaved more than 10 seconds off of her time from last weekend’s Bob Davidson Memorial Invitational, while Palisca made an encouraging collegiate outdoor track & field debut. Both Sigerud and Palisca posted faster times than Doan did as a freshman in the 2019 Raleigh Relays 1,500 (4:39.90).
