Liberty’s duo of Warren Barrett (men’s shot put) and Kennedy Sauder (men’s high jump) each placed 15th in their respective events to garner second team All-America recognition on Saturday, the final day of the 2023 NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships at the Albuquerque Convention Center.
Making his NCAA Division I national meet debut, Barrett reached 59-3 on his third and final shot put attempt to finish 15th in the competition. As a result, he became the first NCAA Division I indoor men’s shot put All-American in Liberty and ASUN Conference history.
The native of Montego Bay, Jamaica was competing for the first time since Jan. 28 due to injury. Barrett joined Clendon Henderson (2008) as the only Flames ever to throw the shot put at this meet thanks to a program-record 64-1.25 effort at the Brant Tolsma Invitational on Jan. 21.
Sauder, a sophomore from Lauderhill, Fla., cleared the high jump’s opening height of 6-10.75 on his first try and got over 7-0.5 on his third attempt before missing on all three jumps at 7-1.75. That performance was good for a 15th-place showing and his third All-America medal in as many tries to begin his collegiate career.
Sauder is the fifth Liberty men’s track & field athlete ever to collect three or more All-America honors at the NCAA Division I level, joining Josh McDougal, Sam Chelanga, Ryan Werner and Michael Decker in that exclusive club.
Barrett and Sauder wrapped up Liberty’s successful indoor track & field season by giving the Flames multiple NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships qualifiers for the first time since 2010. The Flames’ indoor campaign was headlined by a sweep of the ASUN Conference men’s and women’s team titles at the Brant Tolsma Indoor Track at the Liberty Indoor Track Complex, Feb. 24 and 25.
