After scoring a total of 70 points in a pair of ASUN road games this past weekend, Darius McGhee has earned his fourth ASUN Men’s Basketball Player of the Week of the season.
McGhee’s honor is also the ninth of his career, moving into second place all-time in ASUN history for player of the week awards, behind only Lipscomb’s Garrison Matthews. Matthews received 13 ASUN Player of the Week awards from 2016-19.
McGhee leads all ASUN players with four awards this season. The redshirt senior from Roxboro, N.C. averaged 35 points per game in two contests last week at Kennesaw State and Jacksonville State also averaged 5.5 rpg, 1.0 apg and 1.0 spg. McGhee knocked down 13 three-pointers in those two games as well.
McGhee scored the 70 points with great efficiency as well, connecting on 54.2 percent (13-of-24) of his shots from three-point territory and 52.6 percent (20-of-38) overall from the field. The guard was also 17-of-18 (94.4 percent) from the free throw line.
McGhee poured in a season-high 43 points, his fourth career 40-point game, and knocked down eight threes at Kennesaw State, tied for the second most triple ha has made in a game for his career. He also grabbed a season-best eight rebounds versus the Owls.
On Saturday at JSU, McGhee scored 27 points (19 in the first half), in helping Liberty spoil the Gamecocks’ Senior Night with a 79-55 road triumph at Pete Matthews Coliseum. McGhee recorded his 2,500th career point in the contest with a free throw in the second half and is now up 2,503 career points. The guard knocked down five more threes, giving him 498 for his career. With two more makes from long distance, McGhee will become the fourth player in Division I history to hit 500 career three-pointers.
McGhee ranks second nationally in total points (639), total three-pointers (132) and three per game (4.55). He also checks in at No. 8 in the country in scoring average at 22.0 ppg.
McGhee’s other ASUN Player of the Week awards this season came on Nov. 28, Dec. 19 and Dec. 26.
McGhee and the Flames (22-7, 13-3 ASUN) set their sights on their next ASUN game, a road contest on Wednesday evening at Queens (17-12, 7-9 ASUN). Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Curry Arena in Charlotte, N.C.
