Southerland Named CUSA MBB Freshman of the Week

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Liberty's Ben Southerland has been named the Conference USA Men's Basketball Freshman of the Week.
This is the Flames' first-ever CUSA Freshman of the Week award and Southerland's first weekly award. Southerland, a redshirt freshman from Cincinnati, Ohio, posted several career highs in Saturday's 99-26 home win over St. Andrews.
The forward recorded career highs in points (7), rebounds (7), assists (6) and steals (2) in a career-high 22:37 of action. Southerland was also game-best +41 against SAU.
In last Wednesday evening's 74-52 home triumph over Tennessee State, Southerland grabbed one rebound and was a +4 in 4:45 of action against the Tigers.
In the two wins, Southerland averaged 3.5 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 3.0 apg and 1.0 spg.
Southerland is the first Flame since Kyle Rode to receive a weekly award from the league. Rode earned back-to-back CUSA Player of the Week honors on Nov. 13 and 20.
Southerland is also the first Liberty player to receive any kind of freshman or newcomer of the week honor since Rode was selected as the ASUN Newcomer of the Week on Nov. 25, 2019.
Southerland and Liberty (9-3) will play their final game before Christmas on Wednesday evening at Utah Valley (6-5). Tip time is 8 p.m. Eastern from the UCCU Center in Orem, Utah and can be seen on ESPN+.
