Green Makes History in Season-Opening Win

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Liberty tipped off its 2023-24 women's basketball season and its Conference USA era with a 68-46 victory over Frostburg State, Monday afternoon at Liberty Arena. The win was No. 548 of Carey Green's coaching career, making him the winningest coach in Liberty Athletics history.
Beginning his 25th season at the helm of the Lady Flames, Green now owns a 548-217 career record. Monday's triumph broke a tie with Liberty Athletics Hall of Famer Paul Wetmore, who recorded 547 victories as Liberty's softball coach between 1994-2013.
Led by Emma Hess (21 points, 5-6 3FG), the 1-0 Lady Flames never trailed during their first meeting with Frostburg State since 1979. All 12 Liberty players in uniform found the scoring column, including six who tallied their first collegiate points.
Frostburg State remains at 0-0 after classifying the game as an exhibition. Alanna Tate paced the Bobcats with 12 points, but her team shot just 29.8 percent (17-of-57) from the floor.

- Liberty was on top 19-6 after an opening quarter where it held Frostburg State to 17.6 percent (3-of-17) from the field.
Second Quarter
- Frostburg State's offensive struggles continued during the second 10 minutes, as the Bobcats went scoreless for 5:36 to start the frame.
- Hess hit four triples during the stanza, helping Liberty open up a 27-point advantage before taking a 38-13 edge into the intermission. She finished the first half with 19 points and five three-pointers.
Third Quarter
- Alanna Tate tallied six third-quarter points for the visitors, but freshmen Asia Boone, Claudia Acin and Brooke Moore all found the scorebook for the first time in their Liberty careers during the period. Liberty took a 53-24 lead to the fourth quarter.

- After shooting 0-13 from beyond the arc during the first three periods, Frostburg State hit four triples during a 22-point final period.
- Moore tossed in nine fourth-quarter points for the Lady Flames to keep the lead over 18 points.
Notes and Nuggets
- Hess posted her second career 20-point game in only 20 minutes of playing time.
- Smuda's 13 rebounds were a new career high and contributed to her third career double-double. She made her first career start in her 94th career outing.
- Asia Boone became Liberty's first freshman to start her collegiate debut since Mya Berkman in 2018-19.
- Brooke Moore's 13 points were the most by a Liberty freshman in her debut since 2011-12, when Reagan Miller tallied 17 points at UNCG.
- Boone, Moore, Acin, Ella Wigal, Elisabeth Aegisdottir and Casey Hunt all scored the first points of their collegiate career on Monday.
- Emily Howard (8 points) doubled her previous career high of four from last season.
- The Lady Flames posted their 15th straight home win at Liberty Arena, matching their longest winning streak at the facility which opened in December 2020. The Lady Flames are now 43-3 all-time at Liberty Arena.
- Liberty is now 1-1 all-time against Frostburg State. The Bobcats won the only previous meeting, 64-47, on Jan. 15, 1979 during Carey Green's senior year at Coastal Carolina.
