LYNCHBURG, Va. – Kyle Rode has earned Liberty's first-ever Conference USA Men's Basketball Player of the Week award after a strong week on the court in the Flames' first week in their new league.
This is Rode's first career conference player of the week honor. Rode, a CUSA Men's Basketball Preseason All-Conference team selection, averaged 16.0 ppg while shooting over 60 percent from three-point territory and over 50 percent from the field in helping Liberty to a 2-0 start to the season. This past Friday night versus Charlotte in the "He Gets Us" Hall of Fame Series event at the Spectrum Center, the fifth-year senior tallied a game-high 23 points on 9-of-15 shooting and 5-of-9 from long distance. Rode's efforts lifted the Flames to a 71-59 triumph over the 49ers, who were the 2023 CBI champions and won 22 games last year.
Rode was a game-best +27 on the night in 30:56 of action, with the next-best Flame being a +15. The Lexington, Ky. native added three rebounds, two assists and a block and was named HOF Series Charlotte Game 1 Player of the Game.
In last Monday evening's season opener against Mid-Atlantic Christian at Liberty Arena, Rode scored nine points and knocked down a trio of three-pointers in only 10:27 of action in the Flames' 103-43 triumph. The fifth-year senior added two rebounds, two assists and a pair of steals.
In Liberty's first two games, Rode sunk 61.5 percent (8-of-13) of his three-point attempts and shot 52.2 percent (12-of-23) from the floor.
Rode is Liberty's first conference weekly award winner since Darius McGhee earned his ninth career ASUN Player of the Week accolade on Feb. 20, 2023.
Rode and the Flames (2-0) turn their attention to the 2023 Myrtle Beach Invitational, held Thursday through Sunday at Coastal Carolina's HTC Center in Conway, S.C. Liberty will open up the event with a quarterfinal showdown against Furman (2-0), Thursday evening at 7 p.m. That game can be seen on ESPN+.
