Three Liberty standouts were named to the 2021-22 CoSIDA Academic All-District® Men’s and Women’s Track & Field/Cross Country teams on Thursday. Calli Doan and Meredith Engle were included on the women’s team, while John Hicks was voted to the men’s squad.
Academic All-District® honorees advance to the 2021-22 CoSIDA Academic All-America® ballot. First-, second- and third-team Academic All-America® honorees will be announced in June.
Doan collected her third consecutive Academic All-District® recognition, while Engle and Hicks were honored for the first time in their respective careers.
A native of Apex, N.C., Doan recently graduated with a bachelor’s degree in exercise science, maintaining a 3.99 GPA. She earned All-America honors this past fall with a 28th-place finish at the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships. Doan was voted ASUN Women’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the second consecutive season after leading the Lady Flames to the ASUN women’s cross country team title with a first-place individual finish.
Doan did a considerable amount of record setting in 2021, clocking program records for the cross country 5K (16:57.4) and 6K (19:50.6) along with the ASUN Conference standard for the indoor 5K (16:12.91).
A computer science major with a 4.0 GPA, Engle was the lone sophomore to earn CoSIDA Academic All-District® recognition for District 3. She was named both ASUN Most Valuable Female Performer and ASUN Women’s Most Outstanding Field Performer during the indoor track & field season.
The VaSID second team all-state performer from Dillsburg, Pa., won the ASUN pentathlon title (personal-best 3,896 points), took second in the high jump and placed fourth in the first triple jump competition of her collegiate career. During Engle’s ASUN pentathlon victory, she high jumped a personal-best 5-8.5 to match the meet and facility records.
A Romney, W.Va., native, Hicks earns his second academic award of the year, going along with his ASUN All-Academic Team notation from the indoor season. He is an exercise science major with a 3.75 GPA. Hicks claimed ASUN titles both indoors (weight throw) and outdoors (hammer), while throwing the hammer at the NCAA Division I East Preliminary Round meet.
