A career season has led to another honor for Liberty’s Demario Douglas, as the wide receiver has been added to the 2022 Biletnikoff Award watch list.
Douglas was one of four players added to the list today, joining Louisiana Tech’s Tre Harris, Colorado State’s Tory Horton and Rice’s Bradley Rozner.
The Biletnikoff Award annually recognizes the season’s outstanding FBS receiver in college football. Any player, regardless of position (wide receiver, tight end, slot back, and running back) who catches a pass is eligible for the award. As such, the Biletnikoff Award recognizes college football’s outstanding receiver, not merely college football’s outstanding wide receiver.
Douglas is the second player in program history to be named to the Biletnikoff Award watch list. Antonio Gandy-Golden was named to the list in 2018 and 2019 and was a semifinalist for the honor in 2019.
Douglas is having a career year for the Flames in 2022. He leads the Flames with a career-best 760 receiving yards and has matched his career-high total with six receiving touchdowns.
Douglas has recorded three of his six career 100-yard games in 2022 – 124 yards and two touchdowns at Wake Forest, 134 yards and a touchdown at UMass and 145 yards and a touchdown at Arkansas.
The redshirt sophomore currently ranks No. 22 in the country in receiving yards, No. 24 in receiving yards per game (84.4) and No. 37 in receiving touchdowns.
The native of Jacksonville, Fla. is also on another national award watch list. For the last two seasons, Douglas has been on the Paul Hornung Award watch list, presented annually to the most versatile player in college football.
Besides his outstanding receiving numbers, Douglas also leads Liberty in punt returns (14/4.1 yards per return) and is second on the Flames’ roster in kickoff returns (eight/21.1 yards per return). He is averaging 109.1 all-purpose yards per game in 2022.
The 2022 Biletnikoff Award winner will be presented the Biletnikoff Award trophy by TQC Foundation Chairman Mark Ryan and the banquet keynote speaker Drew Pearson, member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, at the black-tie Biletnikoff Award Banquet & Celebration at the Dunlap Champions Club, at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee on Saturday, March 4, 2023. The banquet was hailed by 2014 keynote speaker Dick Vermeil, as well as by 2013 keynoter Larry Csonka, as "the best banquet in college sports."
