Competing in her first pentathlon of the season, Liberty’s Meredith Engle performed well on the opening day of the second annual Brant Tolsma Invitational. She placed second overall and first among collegiate entrants with a personal-best score of 3,722, Thursday at the Brant Tolsma Indoor Track at the Liberty Indoor Track Complex.
The native of Dillsburg, Pa., shattered her previous personal best (3,559), which had netted Engle a runner-up finish in the 2021 ASUN pentathlon as a freshman. Engle’s score of 3,722 ranks No. 5 all-time both at Liberty and within the ASUN Conference. It also ranks No. 13 on this season’s NCAA Division I national performance list.
Engle’s competition on Thursday featured a pair of lifetime bests (9.09 60 hurdles and 39-0.5 shot put). She also long jumped an indoor personal-best 17-6.25, won the 800 in a pentathlon personal-best 2:26.32 and was just a half inch off her high jump PR at 5-4.5.
First-year Lady Flame Grace Ann Hopkins joined Engle in Thursday’s pentathlon, tallying a personal-best 2,878 points for ninth place out of 15 competitors. She recorded her best marks of the season in the high jump (4-7) and 800 (2:32.87).
