Liberty’s Jeremy Davis headlined the host team’s four event winners on day two of the second annual Brant Tolsma Invitational, Friday at the Brant Tolsma Indoor Track at the Liberty Indoor Track Complex. He broke the meet record with his winning leap of 24-3.5.
Davis’ 24-3.5 effort, the best indoor mark of his career, eclipsed the previous meet record of 23-9.5 set by Montreat’s Dustin Blevins a year ago. It outdistanced ASUN rival Kelvin Campbell of Kennesaw State by five inches for the event victory.
Davis is now tied for No. 5 in program history with former teammate Darrel Jones. He also ranks second behind teammate Quinten Clay in the ASUN this season and among the top 50 performers nationally.
Liberty swept both of Friday’s weight throw competitions, including victories by John Hicks (59-10.5) and Naomi Mojica (59-9). Hicks has now won each of his last four weight throw competitions at home, while Mojica made a successful 2021-22 season debut.
Noel Palmer (17:09.00) and Jamie Anderson (18:05.03) went 1-2 for the Lady Flames in the evening’s final running event, the women’s 5K.
Brandon Letts (22.01) and Janai Scott (25.08) each won their heat and placed second overall in the men’s and women’s 200 dash, respectively.
Ayanna Johnson was one of seven women to break the meet record in the long jump, placing seventh with a top mark of 19-0.5.
Competing unattached, Cole Peterlin enjoyed a banner day in the heptathlon. Making his season debut after playing wide receiver for the Liberty football team, Peterlin placed second overall (first collegiate) in the heptathlon with a personal-best 5,098 points. That score would rank No. 7 in the NCAA this season and No. 8 in program history if he had been representing the Flames.
Peterlin’s score was buoyed by big personal bests in the 60 hurdles (8.23) and pole vault (14-5.25) on Friday.
Also in the heptathlon, post-collegiate athlete Dylan Cooper set a facility record with 5,608 points and Rodney Atherton broke the American record for the 65-69 age group with his age-graded score of 5,920.
