Saturday's Top Storylines
- Liberty's (7-2) final road game of the 2021 season will pit the Flames against No. 15/15 Ole Miss (6-2, 3-2 SEC) for the first time, Saturday at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.
- The Flames are meeting an FBS Top 25 opponent for the first time this season and just the fourth time in program history. Liberty is 1-2 all-time against Top 25 foes. The Flames topped No. 9/11 Coastal Carolina 37-34 (OT) in the 2020 Cure Bowl in their most recent Top 25 matchup, Dec. 26, 2020.
- Former Ole Miss Head Coach Hugh Freeze (2012-16) will aim to guide Liberty to its first-ever win over an SEC opponent and its first victory in Mississippi.
- In his third season as Liberty's head coach, Freeze has posted a 25-8 record, including a 19-3 mark over the last 22 games. He has coached the Flames to back-to-back Cure Bowl wins.
- Liberty QB Malik Willis has accounted for 30 TDs (21 passing/9 rushing) during the season's first nine games. He and Ole Miss QB Matt Corral are the only two FBS QBs ranked among the top 30 nationally for both passing TDs and rushing TDs. Willis scored a rushing TD for Auburn against Liberty on Nov. 17, 2018 in the Flames' only previous game versus an SEC squad.
- The Flames' defense ranks No. 10 nationally for total defense (300.0 ypg allowed) and No. 13 for scoring defense (17.8 ppg allowed). Liberty has held six of its nine opponents below the 20-point mark.
A Liberty Win Would ...
- Mark the Flames' first victory over Ole Miss and their first win against any SEC opponent.
- Be the Flames' second win over an FBS Top 25 opponent in program history.
- Represent the Flames' first-ever victory in the state of Mississippi.
- Give the Flames their 13th season in program history with eight or more wins, including their third in a row.
- Be the Flames' fourth road win of the season, giving Liberty its most road victories since the 2014 Flames went 5-3 in road games.
- Snap Ole Miss' six-game home winning streak and make Liberty the first non-conference team to win in Oxford since Cal on Sept. 21, 2019.
- Mark Hugh Freeze's first win coaching from the visiting sidelines at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.
